The imagery of the house is symbolic – an ego-centric structure built by our intellect to resolve the question ‘who am I?’. It’s answer ultimately is the ‘self’, which allows governs the building and only allows certain things in and out. However, if numerous Koans where to slip in the front door they would surely begin to challenge this structure. If left to their devices, what could happen would be life changing.
‘What is the meaning of life?’ is not a valid question. It wrongly assumes that ‘meaning’ is a inherent feature of life waiting to be discovered. It is not.
Our intellect is the corner stone of our understanding of reality. However, it is driven by language and meaning, which are inherently limited and biased. To get beyond these limitations, the poet skillfully crafts language to expand the horizons of comprehension and truth. So to does the Zen Koan. Are they related?
